The journey from an idea to Skillbit, your free personal “My Skills” section on the Internet.

It’s easier if you see it: skillb.it/marplex

After reading many personal portfolio pages, I saw a common pattern. Almost everyone had the “My Skills” section. I wanted to give this opportunity to everyone; that’s why I built Skillbit: the easiest and fastest way to have your personal “My Skills” section on the internet.

It all started as a side project and I occasionally worked on it during my free time. The problem is, my desire to work on other exciting projects would have ended up leaving the current one unfinished. And it always happened.

But this time it was different. I committed myself to finishing the project and I started taking it more seriously. After nearly two months of focused work, Skillbit was born.

Skillbit is my second launched product (the first one was dreambox.one, an AI-assisted dream journal app). Although I had some previous experience, this time was totally different.

This project was my first web-only application. I’ve decided to switch from Android to web because I wanted to expand my comfort zone and learn new skills.

Are you a developer? If you want to know more on how I built Skillbit, I wrote another post on Dev.to that explains the “behind the scenes”.

Build your Skillbit

My Skillbit page at skillb.it/marplex

You can view my skill page by visiting skillb.it/marplex. It’s neat and simple. With one short link, you can share your skills everywhere on the internet.

This is the builder. It’s the “behind the scenes” of your Skillbit; you can use it to create your page. Just add your skill, choose the name, and select one number from 1 to 10 (this will express your proficiency at that skill).

You can also further personalize your page. Choose background and skill colors, as well as the type of the texture (flat or gradient). Create your first Skillbit and let the world know what you are really great at. Have a try at skillb.it.

What’s next

This is just the beginning. There are endless possibilities to further improve Skillbit. For example, here are some points that I could work on:

  • Add per-user page analytics
  • Add more customization options
  • Add a link section on every Skillbit
  • LinkedIn integration
  • And more…

Why it’s free?

Did I mention that Skillbit is completely free? Yes, you don’t have to pay a single cent.

I don’t want to monetize this project, at least for now. Even though I might do it in the future, I would still do it ethically.

I hate ads and 1000 words long funnel pages; they just add noise to the internet. Instead, I believe we all have to add value to the world. In other words, give out more than you take in: positive net contribution.

You can do it too

Following this principle, I encourage you to build something useful. Stay away from noise and stay away from generating noise.

Skillbit is my attempt at doing this, hope you like it.
